>> do solemnly swear. >> that i will support and defend. >> the ceremony lasted less than an hour. thousands attended including arnold schwarzenegger. supporters threw a party and this evening was the official reception. ken wayne is live from the latest event. >> reporter: jerry brown is spending his first night as the new governor in sacramento after hosting a reception at the california state railroad museum. jerry brown didn't give a speech or talk to reporters. the new governor worked the crowd at an invitation only event that drew about 4,000 people. one of the questions on the minds of many here is how he will deal with the state's budget deficit. one vert says he is the only

secretary tomorrow other members of the state took office today. the insurance commissioner was sworn in, returning for a second time are the state controller and the secretary. also, the first female attorney general in the state was inaugurated today as well. more on that is coming up after a 10:30. political pay back following mayor gavin newsom's decision to delay his swearing in as the lieutenant governor. a board of supervisors committee refused to approve six out of nine of his last- minute appointments. he will not step down until the new board is installed on january 8th. it would fall to the new board to pick his replacement. >> to approve these appointments and not allowed to make an interim appointment.

southbound lanes of highway 101 were closed after a garbage truck overturned it at 5:25 at the height of the evening commute. the driver of the california waste solutions truck lost control and the truck overturned at the intersection of 101 and i-880. the truck was leaking oil. the driver suffered injuries but they are not life threatennening. the san jose family asking for help in finding a hit and run driver that struck a teenaged boy. the boy's stepmother treated this anymore the middle of the road until the ambulance arrived. >> reporter: today friends gathered at the regional medical center of san jose where kate has spent the first days of the new year unconscious. >> the most terrifying nightmare of a parent. >> reporter: the hit and run happened 6:00 p.m.

new year's eve minutes after his car and another vehicle collided on the highway. he was with his 15-year-old brother hunter. >> he told me to go home. >> reporter: it appears that kayden went to exchange information with the driver when a third vehicle hit him and drive off. witnesses could son-in-law say it was a dark suv. kayden's father arrived at the scene and found his son bleeding in the road. >> he was unconscious, bleeding, head wounds. you know, going into shock, basically. >> reporter: his stepmother is a trained emt and ran to help. >> i had to say it was really difficult to look at your son laying in the road. >> reporter: tonight the senior at santa teresa high school is recovering with gashes on his head, metal tapes and a bruised lung. >> knowing that the person hit him and just left. i can't comprehend that. >> reporter: tonight it appears

federal investigators are calling on pg&e to find and fix other potentially faulty gas lines before they explode like the one in introduce know. they issued seven representations, six labeled urgent. we are live in the introduce know with reaction. >> reporter: eight people died in this neighborhood. 50 homes were damaged or destroyed. damaged like this house, unliveable. survivors welcome the reforms but note they come too late. nancy and marla grabbed their pets and ran. their home just 500 feet from the explosion's epicenter.

weekend. the favrey is considering firing the person who was the second in command on the u.s.s. enterprise when the videos were produced he is now the commander of the nuclear powered aircraft. president obama and democrats are heading to a battle with republicans in the house over health care reform. republican leaders plan to hold votes on repealing the health care overhaul plan one piece at a time. but they don't have an alternative plan to offer and democrats say they will fight it every step of the way. the full repeal of the entire health care package would be difficult. a group of democratic senators wants to put limits on filibusters. one wants them only to be used to hold up a final vote on a bill. that is the first day of the new congress and the only day that senate rules can be change bade simple majority. in the past two years there

prosecutors argue they need access to the recording to prepare for the hearing to determine his competency to stand trial. a judge sealed the tape until the report is finished. we learned the identities of a couple shot to death in their home yesterday. they are a 66-year-old man and a 68 ideal woman. detectives said there was no public safety concern. frank was a real estate broker in campbell. she was a social worker. police say a 22-year-old woman is blind bars in connection with a double shooting that left two men seriously injured at the hamilton marketplace shopping center. alexander coil was arrested a half hour after the shooting. people at the safeway were shocked to see the crime scene. >> i come here every morning for coffee before work: it is

upsetting. >> investigators say it is not clear if coil was the shooter or in the suspect vehicle at the time of the shooting. the santa clara county coroner identified the man killed by a vta light rail. his death is being investigated as an accident. the woman whose body was found on highway 101 also in san jose was identified today by the county coroner as a 21- year-old of san jose. the california highway patrol is keeping tight lipped about other details concerning her death. her body was found on the northbound side of the freeway on saturday at 4:00 in the morning. the grapevine is open to traffic but caltrans is advising those with trailers and campers not to use i-5 overnight. from sunday afternoon until noon today, snow and ice closed

part of the route which connected the valley to los angeles. in las vegas mother nature is providing the newest attraction, snow. about an inch fell overnight in the city with up to six inches on the higher elevations. by late today the snow had melted but the damage was done at the airport where the flights had to be canceled. and we have fog forming out there right now. plenty of fog showing up in the sacramento area up around woodland as well. tonight's story will be the fog. it is drying out. the fog in the inland bay valley. tomorrow morning there will be a good dose of it in woodland, davis, vacaville and livermore and clayton. the dew point is 36 degrees. the temperature is 37 degrees. once the temperature drops one more degree in santa rosa, the clouds will form. that is what the dew point is,

some cancer experts are calling it a breakthrough. a little blood and a micro chip could hold the future to detectiving cancer before it begins or tell if a treatment is working. jury charge john fowler explains how it works. >> reporter: a new noninvasive test could take guess work out of the cancer equation. >> the more we know about cancer and finding ways to stop it, that is fabulous. >> reporter: long before any of us get a cancer tumors, cells circulate in our blood. scientists say a new test can scan billions of blood cells and find a single cancer cell. johnson & johnson announced a collaboration to bring this lab on a chip to market. it is a breakthrough that has

and community health organizations is calling on governor brown to reverse a decision to use a pesticide approved for use last month and they want to block the use of it in california fields. the chemical is listed as a carcinogen. laboratory tests are linked to miscarriages and thyroid disease. but state officials say it can be used safety. the bay guardian newspaper announced that its battle with the weekly is over. the editor says that the papers reached a monetary settlement. in 2004 the guardian filed an antitrust against the two years ago a judge ordered sf weekly to pay damages to the guardian. the total was 21-year-old. the supreme court denied an

sacramento. it will be in the bay area for the next two mornings. the morning compute will be hampered by more fog. it will gradually grow. so, no dense fog advisory tonight. but there will be dense valley fog monday through friday. a warming trend because the fog will clear and when it does the temperatures will be in the 50s. this is the forecast model. look where the rain is. it is forecasting clouds and you don't see any clouds moving in other than the fog until thursday. we are dry. for the first time in a while we have a five-day forecast that shows no rain and just a lot of valley fog especially in the big valley from sacramento south to fresno. the worst time to travel in the fog is in the late night and early morning hours. the visibilitysare down to a quarter mile in davis. if you have to travel in the valley in the early morning hours try to do it before or after 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 when the fog has a chance to lift.
